Gifts of The Holy Spirit

A lot of us are very familiar with the fruit of the spirit but are not au fait with the Gifts of the Spirit, we know of prophecy vaguely but are not certain of how it works and have seen a huge display of this gift in the body of Christ to an extend of erroneous ministration and teachings. Apostle Paul mentions one thing that is so important about the Gifts of the spirit before teaching the church in Corinth, he outlines that he does not want us to be ignorant when it comes to these gifts, we find this in in 1 Corinthians 1:12 “now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed."

He deemed it rather imperative that the church knew the workings and dealings of the Spirit, he further says that many have been led astray by their ignorance in this regard.

We also see Jesus speak greatly about the comforter and the promise of the father, he was adamant that the disciples should wait for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Luke 24:29 “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is a transforming of our spirit into oneness with Christ and an imbuing of power, Mark says in Mark 16:17 "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues”. These are an outward indication of the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

This infilling of this power is of God and you will notice that some people operate in various gifts of the Holy Spirit some in one gift and others can flow effortlessly in all gifting’s, when going through scripture we see how Jesus could easily move from one gift to the other.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10 “To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues."

Let’s have a look at the Gifts in categories to help us with understanding.

Utterance Gifts:

1. Speaking in tongues

Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” We can say that speaking in tongues is one of the first outward signs of the infilling of the Holy Spirit for the reason that immediately when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples in the upper room they began to speak in tongues, this however does not mean that you do not have the Holy Spirit if you do not speak in tongues yet. It is however prudent for one to stir up this gift that is within them 1 Corinthians 14:2 says “For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”

Praying in tongues will assist you in your secret place Apostle Paul also says in 1 Corinthians 14:14 “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.” Praying in the spirit quickens your soul to be in alignment with your spirit it is at this that Apostle Paul said “The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself”

There is also the speaking in tongues that is a language of a different nationality unknown to the speaker and this gift is often seen when evangelists went to different countries to preach the gospel in order for them to be clearly understood by the natives, we find this display in the upper room in Acts 2:6 "And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered because each one was hearing them speak in his own language."

2. Interpretation of tongues

The supernatural ability to interpret in the native tongue what is uttered in the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:12 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.

3.Prophecy

Prophecy is a supernatural enabling by the Spirit of God to hear His voice and then deliver the message of what that voice is saying. If you are prophesying without God then you're not prophesying from the correct source. The difference between psychics, sangomas, tarrot card reader's, and the prophets in the Kingdom of God is the source of their revelation. Prophets grounded in the Kingdom of God receive revelation from the Holy Spirit. Apostle Paul mentioned one aspect of prophecy saying that “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.” in 1 Corinthians 14:5.

Prophecy is directly linked to hearing the voice of God and Apostle Paul was highlighting that this is where you and I should aspire to be, as the resultant effect of this is moving with the Holy Spirit effortlessly.

Now all of us can prophesy because we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but that does not mean all of us are prophets. The difference is that if someone is called a prophet then we are looking at a different function. The prophet function in Ephesians 4 is more of a life call. Which is God-given it is part of who you are.

Power Gifts:

1. Healing

Healing is a display of the power of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 9:35 says this about Jesus “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.” Where Jesus was there was a certainty of healing, nobody could be in his presence without meeting the healing hand of the Lord. The flow of the power of healing upon him was met with great anticipation from others, the woman with the issue of blood inwardly contemplated that if only if she could touch the hem of his garment she will be made well – she did so and she received her healing.

2. Faith

This is a supernatural ability to believe God without human doubt, unbelief, and reasonings. This faith is the faith that moves mountains, a faith that enables the impossible to be possible. We see a demonstration of the power of faith that enabled Peter to walk on water, He had faith on the one who bid him to come - the impossible became possible at that moment and the laws of nature were defied and he started walking on water, when he began to doubt he started sinking. Another display of the Gift of Faith is the narration of the fig tree in Mark 11:20-25 “In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered! ”Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.’”

3. Miracles

This is supernatural power to intervene in the ordinary course of nature and to counteract natural laws if necessary. Jesus turning water into wine and feeding the 5000 was a display of this power gift in Matthew 14:15-21 “As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.”

Revelatory Gifts

1. Word of wisdom

This is supernatural revelation, or insight into the divine will and purpose of God, often given by the Spirit to solve perplexing problems and situations. When King Solomon was visited by God he requested for wisdom and subsequently he solved many problems and cases brought before him like the complex case between two women and the issue of their babies found in 1 Kings 3:16 - 28. The Pharisees came to Jesus not knowing that he is wisdom in the flesh when they brought the case of the woman who was caught in adultery and many other cases to test him.

John 8:4-11 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

2. Word of Knowledge

Word of Knowledge is a supernatural revelation of Divine knowledge or insight in the Divine mind, will or plan of God, to know things that could not be known of oneself. An example of word of knowledge is found when Jesus was talking to Nathaniel, Jesus told him where he was before he came to see him -no one could’ve known this information except for Nathaniel alone and that is why his response was of such great exclamation that Jesus is the son of God. John 1:47 – 49 “When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.” 48“How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus :replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49“Rabbi,” Nathanael a - nswered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

3. Discerning of spirits

This is a supernatural revelation or insight into the realm of spirits to detect their presence and plans. An example of this is how Jesus could easily detect that it was the devil that had entered Peter in Matthew 16:21 – 23 “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

There is so much more to teach on this however I will end the article here; I believe the Lord will continue to reveal more to you as you begin to understand these gifts and to also seek the Lord in the Graces he has placed within you, in order for you to start walking in them for the Glorification of the Lord.
